The Famous Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy - MS. MALADJUSTED!

SHARMEEN OBAID-CHINOY - A hot new figure in Pakistani news and media. She made it to the Oscars twice and only last week won her second Oscar for her most recent documentaries, “A Girl In The River: The Price of Forgiveness”. Back home, she is now ‘hashtaged’ - #WeDisownSharmeen.

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s goal is to bring social issues into light and give voice to people that can not afford to have one. Unfortunately, while gaining much popularity globally, she isn’t liked very much in Pakistan and much of her audience base is overseas. Why aren’t Pakistanis proud? – because they feel she is winning Oscars by defaming Pakistan.

Here, I offer a CORRECTION! Her documentaries, are just that - A ‘D-O-C-U-M-E-N-T-A-R-Y’ – a factual report on a specific subject of REAL events. Documentaries about the culture and grand beauty of Pakistan is not going to bring reform to all the political injustice. It is important to view the broader picture, that is, she is working to bring change in Pakistan’s unfair judicial legislature. In gaining popularity outside of Pakistan, she is making a change within Pakistan.

THE POINT IS THAT THE WOMAN IS TRYING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE! A DIFFERENCE CAN’T AND WON’T BE MADE UNLESS PEOPLE ARE MOVED, AND THAT IS WHAT SHARMEEN OBAID-CHINOY IS DOING, BECAUSE THAT IS HOW YOU MAKE POLITICAL CHANGE.

Martin Luther King, in a speech at Western Michigan University 18th December 1963, brought up this idea of "maladjustment". Maladjustment is failing to cope with the demands of a normal social environment. He says, "certainly, we all want to avoid the maladjusted life. In order to have real adjustment within our personalities, we all want the well-adjusted life." It is only human nature to want to fit in and work in the realm of societal norms. However, "there are certain things in our nation and in the world which I (MLK) am proud to be maladjusted and which I (MLK) hope all men of good-will will be maladjusted until the good societies realise." Martin Luther King strongly argues that men and women that have a sense of maladjustment towards segregation, discrimination, religions bigotry, poverty and physical violence are as the prophet Amos. Amos, "in the midst of the injustices of his day could cry out in words that echo across the centuries, 'LET JUSTICE ROLL DOWN LIKE WATERS AND RIGHTEOUSNESS LIKE A MIGHTY STREAM'." - An upraor for righteousness is what Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's work is awakening amongst the people of the nation of Pakistan.
